Akihiko Izukura is a world-renowned natural fiber and textile artist who descends from a prestigious line of master silk weavers for the imperial family of Japan. Mr. Izukura is Kyoto-based, and has been splitting his time working in Honolulu for the past couple of years on his Zero-Waste Design philosophy installations. He also teaches workshops on his various raw material techniques at the Honolulu Museum of Art and collaborating with the University of Hawaii fashion students.
Mr. Izukura’s work will be showcased as the main event through a fashion show for the Kick-off event for Hawaii Fashion Month 2013. Twenty of his original silk creations will be shown on live models for the very first time outside of a museum setting. Each piece is intricately hand-woven and beautifully hand-dyed featuring four different techniques: Netting, Braiding, Weaving, and Entwining. After the show, these pieces will then be showcased on a gallery installation next to the runway for public viewing during the two days of OUTFIT: Hawaii Fashion Designer’s Market.
